COLOMBO, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet-appointed expert committee is reviewing the country's current and future trade agreements and is expected to submit recommendations by June, local media reported on Sunday, quoting a senior official.
Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development Secretary K.A. Vimalenthirarajah said any decision on resuming currently suspended negotiations or launching new talks will be taken only after the committee issues its findings.
The government wants a logical basis for entering into trade agreements, he said, adding that the panel includes representatives from research institutions and relevant government departments.
He said the committee is examining existing agreements as well as negotiations under consideration and possible future deals.
Sri Lanka currently has free trade agreements with India, Pakistan, Singapore and Thailand. The country is also part of regional and multilateral arrangements. ■
