ABUJA, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a bus and a truck collided on an expressway in Nigeria's southeast region, the traffic police said late Saturday.
Franklin Agbakoba, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Enugu, told reporters in the state capital Enugu that a total of 36 people were involved in the incident along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway on Saturday evening.
The two vehicles from opposite directions collided due to "wrongful overtaking and overspeeding," Agbakoba said, citing preliminary investigation.
He noted that the remains of the deceased were deposited in a nearby morgue, while the injured were sent to a government hospital for treatment.
The traffic police commander said that its personnel had also cleared off all obstructions on the expressway caused by the accident, which earlier hindered the free flow of vehicular traffic.
Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving. ■
