KABUL, April 7 (Xinhua) -- At least 132 people have been killed and 192 others injured in rain-triggered flash floods, landslides, roof collapses, thunderstorms and lightning strikes across Afghanistan over the past 12 days, the National Disaster Management Authority said on Tuesday.
The deluge has inflicted extensive damage on local communities, completely or partially destroying 5,363 homes, washing away or severely damaging nearly 357 km of roads, and inundating 15,732 acres of farmland, while wasting large numbers of livestock and disrupting irrigation systems in remote areas, the authority said.
Emergency relief has been dispatched to affected regions through provincial departments, and residents have been urged to avoid flood-prone zones and riverbanks during periods of heavy rain to prevent further casualties and property loss, the authority added.
Rescue and relief teams, in coordination with national and international organizations, are conducting detailed damage assessments in the worst-hit areas.
Afghanistan's meteorological department has forecast continued heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours and issued fresh warnings of potential flooding in remote and vulnerable districts across 21 out of the country's 34 provinces. ■
