Belgium arrests 8 activists for infiltrating military base

BRUSSELS, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Eight activist members of the "Nuke free zone" campaign, including Brussels lawmaker Zoe Genot, were arrested on Sunday morning after infiltrating the Kleine-Brogel military air base in the province of Limburg in Belgium, news agency Belga reported.

The objective was simple -- focusing on American nuclear warheads that have been illegally stored for more than sixty years on Belgian soil.

The activists entered by carrying banners denouncing the illegal presence of nuclear weapons, according to an online statement released Sunday by the NGO "Agir pour la paix".

Inscribed in bold letters at the bottom of the page, the NGO reminds citizens of the importance of ending nuclear weapons: "Nuclear weapons are not and will never be a solution."

According to the organization, this action was a clear message for the Belgian government to immediately establish a roadmap for the withdrawal of nuclear weapons on Belgian territory and sign the Treaty of Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

"At a time when Belgium is preparing to sit proudly at the United Nations Security Council, we would not understand that it refuses to sign this Treaty and thus play a role of Western leadership in disarmament," added the NGO.

The action group has already announced publicly that it will organize demonstrations and peace movements during the NATO summit on June 11-12.

"It is time for NATO to disappear," it said, according to Belgian newspaper 7sur7.
